Moving Yourself

You dont have to be rich to hire a moving company!

When you compare the cost and hassle of renting a moving truck and doing it yourself, to that of hiring a professional moving company such as 7 Brothers Moving Company, you may be surprised!

Here are some typical costs and hassles of renting a truck and doing it yourself:

  1. Truck rental – $20 - $40 / day plus tax. Wait in line; fill out a bunch of paper work.
  2. Insurance for any truck damage - $15-$30 / day.
  3. 70 cents to 90 cents per mile – for a local move. This is from when you pick up the truck, to when you return the truck. If you go back and forth between locations, or travel from Provo to Salt Lake and back, this can easily be more than 100 miles. Expect to pay between $40 and $150 extra just for mileage on top of the base rental truck cost for a local move. Hope the truck doesn’t break down and there are no accidents.
  4. Dolly Rental – box dollies and appliance dollies for refrigerators, dryers, safes, etc. with rental costs between $7 and $12 each. You will probably want at least a couple.
  5. Blanket rental.  $1 -$2 / blanket – most moving companies provide far superior blankets/moving pads than you can rent at a rental truck store. Expect to need 10-30 blankets.
  6. If you rent, and don’t get the truck back in until the next day, add another day of rental fees.   Tip: Fill up the truck with gasoline at a store near the rental store, so they don’t charge you the extra $3.50/gallon fill up fee.  Either way, with gas mileage at around 6 mpg, expect to pay $30 – $100 in gasoline at $2.20/gallon.
  7. Pizza and drinks for all of your “Free” help – $30-$60 – hopefully they show up when they are supposed to, and stay long enough to get the job done.
  8. Cost for broken furniture and dented walls and doors from “Free” help - $$$$ This can happen from carelessness, not packing the truck properly, not having the proper equipment, not having the proper blankets, using old grocery store boxes, among other reasons. There is no insurance at rental companies for damage on your own furniture, and don’t expect your brother in law to pay for dented and scratched furniture and walls when he is donating his time.
  9. Clean out the truck before bringing it back; there is an extra charge if you don’t. Wait in line to return the truck, go out and inspect it with the rental company – hope you agree on its condition.
  10. Doctors Bills/ Day off from work/Chiropractor/Hot Tub for back pain after trying to move the piano/ armoire/ and other heavy stuff all day without the proper equipment, and without being in shape! $$$$

The bottom line is that doing it yourself can be very stressful and is much more expensive than popular advertising will have you believe. What started out as a $30 truck will easily cost you $200, $300 or more. Can you say HIDDEN FEES!  And YOU still have to do the work! And beg your neighbors, relatives and friends to give up their day/night to help you.  And you know who they will be calling the next time they move.  Yes, ALL of them have YOU #1 on their list!!!!
